Free Image Editor Alternatives

If you need to modify one of the images provided here to fit a space or be a certain size and do not have an image editing program, here are some free alternatives. Note that most of these programs cannot edit a PDF file.

Google Picasa - Picasa is an excellent choice for basic image editing such as cropping. However, the real strength of Picasa is in organization and the provided editing features are those most useful for handling photos. Picasa does the worst job of saving Web-quality images. Picasa is recommended for its organizational prowess but we suggest using something else for editing.

Paint.NET (Windows only) - What started as a college project to replace the useless Windows Paint program has evolved into a very capable editor. Images saved at Web quality are above average. The program is lightweight and thus starts and runs very quickly.

The GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program is an ambitious, open-source project that rivals Photoshop in sophistication and capability. GIMP is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

iPhoto (Mac only) - Available on every Mac, iPhoto can handle most of the editing tasks needed for Web images.

There are many other such programs. A quick search of the Web will turn them up.
