Mike Marx-Gibbons
Percussionist Michael Marx-Gibbons began his music career as a violinist. He was accepted to West Virginia University to play in the university's orchestra and several of its string quartets. After a few semesters of playing and touring with the orchestra, Mike began to turn his attention to percussion, which had been more of a hobby throughout his life. He had completed an album with the rock group "Feedback" for a Time Warner affiliate in 2001, but nothing had ever come of it. In the spring of 2003, he auditioned for the WVU Jazz ensemble as a drum set player and was accepted. Before his first concert however, he was called to Iraq with the United States Army and was forced to leave his percussion aspirations behind.
After returning home from a 15-month tour, Mike was accepted into the nationally touring act "The Secret State" and had a blast touring as a professional drummer with the group. He returned home to Maryland in 2006 to explore other options and began coaching the drumline for Centennial High School in Howard County. The line was so successful that it was invited to perform on the field at Ravens Stadium for a national music competition two years in a row.
After playing with several other local touring acts as well as teaching private lessons, Mike was introduced to Fiction 20 Down in the fall of 2009. The group's unique musical construct and dynamic overtones really impressed Mike and presented a refreshing approach to his style of play. He is extremely excited to have the opportunity to be apart of the group.
